April is Earth Month – a time for renewal, growth, and recommitting to our promise to protect the vibrant Florida landscapes we call home.

At Westminster Communities of Florida, we believe that “starting fresh” isn’t just a seasonal sentiment; it’s a foundational strategy for a future where older adults can thrive in harmony with the environment. As a not-for-profit organization, our mission is rooted in service, and that extends to the stewardship of the land.

From the sparkling waters of Tampa Bay at Westminster Shores in St. Petersburg, to the moss-draped rolling hills of Tallahassee at Westminster Oaks, and the serene waterfront of Westminster Woods on Julington Creek in Jacksonville, our communities are nestled in beautiful locations throughout the state. We recognize that our presence in these diverse ecosystems comes with a responsibility to contribute to green senior living in Florida.

This Earth Month, we’re digging into our partnership with 4Roots to see how the ‘food is medicine’ philosophy is changing our menus and highlighting the sustainable architecture and conservation efforts protecting our Florida home. From serving up the best in farm-to-table dining to touring the nature-focused wellness spaces across our breathtaking communities, we’re making it easier than ever for residents to connect with the great outdoors and start fresh together.

Westminster Communities Partners with 4Roots to Support Sustainable Agriculture and Green Senior Living

This year, our Earth Month celebration is centered on a transformative collaboration that is reshaping the future of sustainable living. We are thrilled to highlight our blossoming partnership with 4Roots, an innovative Central Florida organization dedicated to “unearthing the power of food to build healthy communities.”

Founded with the vision that food is the most powerful tool we have to transform health and the environment, 4Roots is building a world-class farm campus in the heart of Orlando. Their mission to promote regenerative farming and tackle food insecurity aligns perfectly with our commitment to purposeful, green senior living and high-quality nutrition.

Our collaboration began with a simple shared belief: that our residents deserve the freshest, most nutrient-dense food possible, and that growing this food locally is the most sustainable path forward. Since late 2025, Westminster residents and team members have been hands-on at the 4Roots farm, volunteering to harvest produce and learning about the intricacies of urban sustainable agriculture.

From the 4Roots Mobile Market bringing seasonal sourdough and organic produce to our Westminster Winter Park, Westminster Baldwin Park, and Westminster Towers communities, to our culinary teams winning hearts with Fall Harvest Kale Salads at the Taste of Baldwin Park community event, this partnership is the heartbeat of our larger green commitment.

1. Implementing Sustainable Architecture for Green Senior Living in Florida

For many older adults, the phrase sustainable architecture may sound like technical jargon. However, at its heart, it is simply the practice of building and maintaining homes in a way that respects the natural world while enhancing the well-being of the people inside. For seniors in Florida, this means creating environments that are resilient to heat, thoughtful about water usage, and seamlessly integrated into our unique local landscapes.

How Our Sustainable Architecture Benefits Florida’s Environment:

  • Water Conservation: By implementing low-flow fixtures and high-tech irrigation systems that sense soil moisture, we protect Florida’s precious underground aquifer—the source of our state’s drinking water.
  • Energy Efficiency: Our eco-friendly retirement communities utilize high-performance windows, LED lighting, and reflective roofing to keep homes cool naturally. This reduces the carbon footprint and decreases the strain on the state’s energy grid during those peak summer months.
  • Biodiversity Protection: Whether we are managing the waterfront at Westminster Woods on Julington Creek or the acreage in Tallahassee, our architecture and landscaping are designed to protect local wildlife habitats and native Florida flora.

2. Farm-to-Table Dining at Westminster Communities

At Westminster, farm-to-table dining isn’t just a trendy menu label; it’s a commitment to a shorter, more transparent supply chain. It means that the vegetables served in our dining rooms were likely harvested just a few miles away at 4Roots or other farms we partner with near our communities.

How Farm-To-Table Dining Benefits Florida’s Environment:

  • Drastically Lowers Our Carbon Footprint: Research suggests that emissions from “food miles”—the distance between where food is grown or produced and where it is consumed— are responsible for nearly one-fifth of all food system emissions. Sourcing locally cuts down on food miles, significantly reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with long-haul transportation.
  • Supports Regenerative Agriculture: Our partnership with 4Roots supports farming techniques that restore soil health rather than depleting it. Healthy soil sequesters carbon and helps prevent harmful nutrient runoff into our lakes and springs.
  • Seasonal Vitality: Eating seasonally ensures residents enjoy produce at its nutritional peak, supporting local farmers who are the backbone of Florida’s agricultural heritage.

Our culinary teams are dedicated to bringing these fresh, local flavors and health-forward philosophies to your plate every day. To see how we’re elevating the experience, explore our dining programs here.

3. Healing People and the Planet: Food Is Medicine

We often hear the phrase food is medicine, but it’s important to define it in simple terms for our residents and their families. It is the practice of using nutrient-dense, whole foods to proactively maintain health, manage chronic conditions, and boost overall longevity. It is the ultimate “win-win” for personal wellness and environmental health.

Health Benefits of Food As Medicine for Florida Seniors:

Environmental Benefits:

  • Resource Conservation: Producing plant-based foods generally requires significantly less water and land than animal-based proteins, making it a more sustainable choice for supporting green senior living.
  • Reduced Packaging Waste: By focusing on “scratch-made” meals using whole, local ingredients from 4Roots, we significantly reduce the amount of plastic and cardboard packaging that ends up in Florida’s landfills.

4. Connecting to Nature for Longevity and Joy Benefits Senior Health

One of the most sustainable aspects of our My W Life Wellness Program is how it encourages residents to interact with the outdoors. Not only do we provide a place to live, we also provide a gateway to the natural world.

Research confirms that “green exercise” – spending time in nature – reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) and improves immune function in older adults. Our communities are designed to foster this connection:

  • Westminster Shores: Residents can enjoy the restorative power of the bay breeze and stunning waterfront views. Our newly featured nativescape garden is a prime example of sustainable architecture for better living. Home to plants native to the St. Petersburg area, this sustainable space offers the perfect spot to connect with neighbors, embrace a moment of peace and quiet, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of the Tampa Bay coastline.
  • Westminster Woods on Julington Creek: The waterfront provides a peaceful backdrop for reflection and connection with aquatic life.
  • Westminster Oaks: The canopy of trees and rolling hills offers a unique, serene environment for active aging. Studies have shown that spending time in forests also exposes you to antifungal and antimicrobial chemicals produced by forest plants, which help improve your body’s ability to fight virus- and tumor-infected cells.

Our bi-monthly 4Roots Mobile Market series is a perfect example of this connection. In addition to picking up local produce, residents engage with local honey from J&P Apiary, enjoy live music, and socialize with neighbors in the fresh air, celebrating healthy, active, and green senior living.

5. Leading the Way for Future Generations

As we look to the future, , our commitment to being one of the premier green senior living providers in Florida is only growing. Our goals include comprehensive audits of our resource use and the expansion of our educational series to help residents and team members alike adopt more sustainable habits.

By choosing green retirement communities that prioritize the planet, residents are making a powerful statement. They are proving that you are never too old to “start fresh” with a lifestyle that honors the earth. We are protecting the environment today so that future generations can enjoy the same Florida beauty that we cherish.

Whether it is through our sustainable architecture, our award-winning farm-to-table dining, or our deep-rooted partnership with 4Roots, we are cultivating a community where people and the planet thrive together.

At Westminster Communities of Florida, we are growing a brighter, greener future across the entire state. Happy Earth Month! Interested in learning more about our eco-friendly lifestyle?
