More than 200 Older Adults Prove “Active Living” Knows No Weather

ST. PETERSBURG, February 5, 2026 – Clouds and biting winds over St. Petersburg couldn’t dampen the competitive fire at Eckerd College today as more than 200 residents from Westminster Communities of Florida gathered for the 10th Westminster Games. Swapping sunglasses for winter coats, participants from across the state proved that the “sedentary senior” is a myth, turning a cold, windy day into a high-energy showcase of athletic grit and fellowship.

The centerpiece of this year’s games was the Chair Volleyball Tournament, featuring regional champions who battled through bracket-style play in January to earn their spot at today’s finals. The air buzzed with the sounds of a live DJ and the cheers of community spirit squads as teams vied for the 20-point top prize in a display of agility and team strategy.

“This is a time for residents to enjoy the day, the competition, and the fellowship,” said Hank Keith, Chief Executive Officer of Westminster Communities of Florida. “Seeing them come off the bus, full of energy, you can feel how excited they are to be here.”

In addition to the tournament, residents competed in a Senior Combine, a series of events modeled after professional athletic assessments but tailored for longevity. These included grip strength testing using dynamometers, timed “Sit to Stands,” and a “Timed Walk.” These metrics highlight the organization’s focus on aging well and well-being.

“We designed this year’s competition to be a fun and spirited event celebrating active living, friendly competition, and community pride,” said Kelly Stranburg, Vice President of Healthy Aging and Longevity for Westminster Communities of Florida. “From the physical power required in the Senior Combine to the strategic teamwork of Chair Volleyball, these events are intentionally designed to challenge residents individually and as a community, and support and maintain independence.”

What began as a simple softball rivalry between the three St. Petersburg communities—Westminster Palms, Westminster Shores, and Westminster Suncoast—has evolved into a statewide tradition. Following a rainout, the Games expanded to include Bradenton, followed shortly by Orlando and Winter Park. Today, the event stands as a multi-faceted competition that brings together residents from across the state.

“The Westminster Games started as just a healthy competition and camaraderie for our three St. Petersburg communities. Adding more events and spirit cheers was an addition over the years,” said Westminster Communities of Florida Chief Operating Officer, Garry Hennis. “It’s so much fun to see residents come together and have a great time, sharing the day together, usually in warm weather.”

The event commenced with remarks from Dr. Todd A. Nicolet of Eckerd College, who underscored the long-standing partnership between the college and the Westminster Communities of Florida residents. The day reached its peak as Jim Polaski, Senior Vice President of Operations, presided over the awards ceremony.

The success of the day was made possible by the dedication of the Westminster team members and a network of partners committed to elevating senior well-being. A special thank you is extended to our gracious hosts at Eckerd College, as well as our sponsors: Longevity Scripts, US Foods, Imperial Dade, Hershey’s Ice Cream, NuStep, LLC, and Keiser Corporation.

“We really appreciate the sponsors not only for what they do for the event, but what they do for us all year long in helping us serve the residents,” said Jim Polaski. “Rain or shine it’s a great time!”

When the final points were tallied across Cornhole, the Senior Combine, and Volleyball, Westminster Winter Park was crowned the 2026 Overall Champion, marking their third consecutive victory.
