The Health Benefits of Community Living
Research continues to highlight the positive effects of community living on well-being while underscoring the risks of prolonged social isolation. In 2017, the Mather Institute partnered with Northwestern University to launch a five-year study involving 8,000 older adults, aimed at measuring the influence of Life Plan communities. The study revealed:
- Residents consistently demonstrated higher levels of wellness—physically, emotionally, intellectually, socially, and vocationally—compared to individuals not living in Life Plan communities.
- Participants experienced a marked increase in social interaction and mental stimulation relative to their non-Life Plan counterparts.
