The Health Benefits of Community Living
A growing body of research is showing the benefits of community living on our cognitive, emotional, and physical health along with the health risks of social isolation. In 2017, Mather Institute and Northwestern University began quantifying the impact of Life Plan communities in a 5-year study of 8,000 seniors. Key findings included:
- Residents consistently reported better physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and vocational wellness than their peers.
- Social contact and intellectual engagement among residents significantly increased compared to their non-Life Plan peers.
